The Tamarillo is a subtropical, burgundy
red, oval shaped fruit, which is rich, sweet and fragrant. Naturally
high in vitamin C and slightly tart, it is excellent for both sweet
and savoury uses. The tamarillo, originally from Peru, is popular and
widely cultivated in New Zealand; it is related to the tomato and kiwi
fruit and was once called a 'tree tomato' before being renamed 'tamarillo'
by New Zealand growers in 1967.
We serve the tamarillo either as a dessert fruit with pavlova and whipped
cream or slow roast them, as you would a tomato, with herbs and garlic
and serve them with grilled beef, New Zealand venison or with buffalo
bocconcini and rocket. |
